Miracles of Hyakunin Isshu - How Japan's Beloved 100 Classical Poems Became a Card Game

Guest speaker Takao Ito will discuss Hyakunin Isshu--100 classical tanka poems selected by Fujiwara no Teika in the 13th Century, and how they become the basis of a card game on Tuesday, April 22.
Mr. Ito will present a bilingual lecture about the poems from 4:10 to 5:00 pm. The lecture is for the general audience, and no knowledge of the Japanese language or classical poetry is necessary.
Beginning at 5:10, Mr. Ito will teach a simplified game with 20 of the poems. Knowledge of Japanese hiragana is necessary to participate,but everyone is welcome to observe.
The program, to be held in Room 118 of the Humanities Building, is presented by the Japan Program of the Foreign Languages & Literature Department.
